Abbeyleix Heritage House is Laois' biggest history museum, community centre and business hub.

This week's FOUND IN THE ARCHIVES post is of the minutes book for the Abbeyleix Anglers Association. The first page of the book featured in this week's CURATOR TUESDAY post of lower main street and information on Ivo 5th Viscount De Vesci. The Abbeyleix Anglers Association Minutes Book contains minutes from 1952-1971. The groups first meeting place was at Glen Ban, which previously operated as a school. The first meeting took place on 13th March 1952, and a committee meeting was held the following week. The original committee were as follows:President- Lord De VesciChairman- Edward Mortimer BowersVice-Chairman- Dr. McDonaghSecretary- Mrs A. Hay- may have been Adelaide Winifred HayTreasurer- Mr. A. BardonCommittee members present in 1952 were Dr McDonagh, Robert Walter Hay, William Toole, Kenneth Fyffe and Michael Phelan. The first meetings were also held in Mr. Edward Bowers House, The Abbeyleix Golf Club Pavillion,and the Post House. In 1953 roles in the association changed, with Richard Brandon becoming Vice chairman while Dr. McDonagh became treasurer. The names of committee members in 1953 were:William Toole, Kenneth Fyffe, Michael Phelan, Frank Bowley and P.A. O'Hara.The last entry was for a meeting held in 1971, with only three members attending. However, the previous meeting had much higher attendance in 1970 (see photographs 5 and 6). Abbeyleix has many rivers running through the area, such as the River Gully and River Nore, and the River Erkina which runs through Durrow.
