A history of the Irish Countrywomens Assocition (ICA) in Abbeyleix since the foundation of the guild in 1914 when its name was ‘The United Irishwomen’ and its goal was to ‘get a Milk Depot’ for the town. In the intervening century the guild has been involved almost every facet of life in the town, from the running of the annual agricultural show and the ‘Maytime Festival’ to dances and plays. They have been intrinsic to rural life and this entertaining read brings the organisation to life.
